Bringing the Passion Back to Local Radio

By: Zach Johnson, On-Air Talent

For weeks, I have racked my brain about what to write for this blog. When Woof Boom Radio President, J Chapman, asked me to write this because he valued my opinions and sense of humor, I was flattered! But I also put a lot of pressure on myself to do this well, because it dawned on me:

The president of the company asked me to write something for the company website!

I’ve had a few drafts that I would start then delete because I didn’t like where they were going. Then I would start another and delete it again. I was probably over thinking it, but again…

The president of the company asked me to write something for the company website!

Then the light bulb over my head finally clicked on and I realized what I could write about: The president of the company asked me to write something for the company website! How often does that happen? I started thinking about how much can change in just over a year and I’m not just talking about changing station formats or adding frequencies. I’m talking about the general mood and attitude of an entire company.

Under the previous ownership, our small group of stations was just a cluster that was part of a bigger company. When we would see the man in charge, it would usually be very brief, and a lot of us barely knew him, let alone had any kind of rapport with him. I think the longest conversation I had with him was when he borrowed a phone charger from me. I’m not saying this to knock him at all, he had his focus on so many places that I’m sure it was tough for him to really focus on what we were doing on a day-to-day basis when he wasn’t there.

With our new ownership and Woof Boom Radio, I see J Chapman almost daily, and I feel like he and I actually have a rapport and always greet each other with a smile and a ‘hello’. He knows me well enough that, like I said before, he personally asked me to write this. He told me to write about whatever I felt like writing about.

So why am I telling all of you this?

Because over the last year, since J Chapman and Woof Boom Radio has taken over our little group of radio stations, the general mood in the entire company has changed. Everyone seems happy and wants to come in to work for this company. We all want to put forth the effort to make all of our stations the best that they can be and all of that starts with our leadership. Since Woof Boom has taken over, two stations have adopted new formats. For both of them, there was a lot of time and care put into the changes and the ownership was hands-on every step of the way. Since J was that invested in it, we were all invested in it. The people here seem to have more passion for what they are doing now more than ever before.

I was asked to write about something personal, and that’s what I am doing. I have now been with this group of stations for nearly 10 years and in that time I have seen a lot of changes, from air staff to office personnel and everything in between. With that being said, I feel that I can say with confidence that I have never been more excited to work for these stations than I am now, and I know I’m not the only one.

And we are just getting started.

We are Woof Boom Radio and we are bringing the passion back to local radio.
